The brand is a 9-figure wellness company with thousands of active subscribers, managed by Retention for Brands. Unlike most brands that adopt Zaymo to grow subscriptions, this one had a different mandate. After years of scale, its priority was retention, not acquisition. The goal Retention for Brands set was to reach subscription neutral: the point where returning and reactivated subscribers offset the ones cancelling each month, instead of watching the base shrink.
Initial Problem
The most common reason subscribers cancelled was the same one that drives churn across subscription commerce: too much product. Subscribers were accumulating product faster than they could use it, and when the billing reminder arrived, the easiest path forward felt like cancelling.
The underlying problem wasn’t dissatisfaction with the product. It was friction, and a lack of ownership over the emails themselves:
- Modifying a subscription meant leaving the email. Every change required logging in and navigating account settings on the subscription platform.
- The brand didn’t own its subscription emails. Reminders ran straight off the subscription platform, generic and unmeasured, with no visibility into what customers opened or clicked. The program was gathering dust.
- Cancellation was the path of least resistance. With no self-serve option inside the email, satisfied subscribers churned over a pacing problem, not a product problem.
Zaymo’s Solution
Retention for Brands rebuilt the subscription emails in Klaviyo and made them interactive with Zaymo, giving subscribers every tool they needed to manage their account without leaving the inbox:
- Delay, send now, and swap controls, without leaving the email. Subscribers could push back their next shipment, send it early, or change the product with a single tap. No login, no redirects.
- A retention moment inside the highest-attention email. By giving customers something to do other than cancel, right inside the billing reminder, Zaymo turned a reliable churn trigger into a proactive retention touchpoint.
- Emails the brand finally owned. Built in Klaviyo, on brand, and measurable, so Retention for Brands could see what was working and iterate, rather than sending a generic reminder no one could see into.
Setup
Retention for Brands ran a controlled A/B test on the billing reminder flow to isolate the effect of in-email interactivity:
- Control. A standard billing reminder running off the subscription platform, linking customers out to the on-site portal to make changes.
- Variant. A Zaymo-powered billing reminder with the full subscription management portal embedded directly inside the email.
Both variants were deployed to statistically significant subscriber segments, 25,892 subscribers in total. The same subscription platform and failed-payment recovery were in place on both sides, so the difference between the two groups was Zaymo. The 19.5% reduction in cancellations reflects that difference alone, with no changes to offer, copy, or send timing.
Results
- 19.5% reduction in subscriber cancellations — 1.59% versus 1.98% in control, A/B validated across 25,892 subscribers at 98.1% confidence
- 5.9x more subscribers rescheduled their next order instead of cancelling — 6.73% versus 1.14% in control
- 52% higher email engagement — 15.56% versus 10.26% in control
Takeaways
The 19.5% reduction came from solving a problem that’s easy to misdiagnose. Overstocked subscribers aren’t dissatisfied customers. They’re satisfied customers who’ve temporarily run out of need. The difference between losing them permanently and keeping them subscribed came down entirely to whether they could act on that feeling in the moment, from inside the email.
For a brand chasing subscription neutral, that distinction is the whole game. Acquisition wasn’t the lever. Removing the friction that pushed good subscribers toward the cancel button was. When the highest-attention email in the lifecycle program offers a one-tap way to reschedule instead of a reason to leave, the math of the entire subscription base starts to move in the right direction.
